3 days away from the New York City Half Marathon.
Here is what is going through my mind:
Training for 11 weeks.
Only drank one night in the last 75 days.
Ran 13 miles for the first time.
Lost 16 pounds.
What if I start too fast?
What if I feel sluggish on Sunday?
What if I sleep through my alarm?
What if I can’t sleep the night before?
What if it rains?
What happens to my psyche when I realize that I’m getting passed by old people and women? Do I start to race them? can I stick to my game plan?
What happens if I really have to pee when I’m at the starting line?
What if I don’t break 2 hours?
As you can see I have a lot that I’m over thinking. So just now I decided that I’m not going to worry about any of it. I’m not worrying about my time. I’m not going to worry about how fast my friends have run their half marathons. I’m going to enjoy the race. I’m going to go out there and know that I put 11 weeks of work into this, that I got myself into amazing shape, and was able to put certain priorities back in order…the main one: my overall well-being. So I don’t care if it rains, I don’t care if anyone passes me, I don’t care if I’m not feeling 100%. I need to take a deep breath and realize that I have already accomplished far more than I expected.
(of course, I may or may not be checking my watch to make sure I’m at least close to 2 hours…..)
The Runner’s Expo is today. I need to pick up my bib number and my goodie bag. I hope there is some good stuff in there. Like beer to enjoy after the race, a do-it-yourself cortisone shot, maybe some form of undetectable Russian steroid. I’m just throwing out ideas…..
Also need to go buy some of those energy gel packets. Of course the type I like cost $2.50 a packet. It’s only sugar goop, but I like the way it tastes. I don’t think I’ll go all Lance Armstrong and eat a packet every 2 miles (Yes, Lance Armstrong at 13 energy gel packets when he ran the NYC Marathon), but I think 2 will be enough for an extra boost.
Tonight I have my last run before Sunday. 3.5 miles. I never thought 3.5 miles would be “easy”.
